Growing your presence on Instagram shouldn’t be left up to chance. With a strategy in place, you can take control of your visibility and expand your list of followers.

If you’re only using photos and GIFs to entertain your followers and attract new ones, then you’re missing out. While these are effective ways to engage your audience – there’s another and better way.

Instagram videos.

We all know how popular YouTube is. And we know that online users are consuming hundreds of millions of hours of online video.

This includes on platforms like Facebook and YouTube.

But what about Instagram?

Well, for starters, Instagram Stories has 400 million daily users (twice that of Snapchat). So it doesn’t come as a surprise that there are 8x the searches for Instagram stories than there are for Snapchat Stories.

And it’s not just videos from everyday people that they’re consuming. A whopping 5.2 million users watched branded Instagram videos during Q1 of 2017.

Hopefully, this gives you some insight into how popular Instagram videos are and why you need to be using them as part of your branding strategy.

But once you start posting videos, how do you get views for them?

Let’s take a look.

1. Hashtags – the Key to More Visibility

You can’t expect to get more views for your videos if you’re not optimizing them to be found. This is where Hashtags can prove beneficial.

Hashtags are the “SEO” of the social media realm. You insert the right ones into your posts and it can help drive visibility and traffic to your page.

What’s great about hashtags is that it helps reach new users, making it easier to grow your list of followers. But how do you choose the right hashtags?

First, you want hashtags that are relevant to your niche. For example if you’re in the food and beverage industry, you may want to use the hashtag #foodpics, which gets 3.65% engagement.

You can use Instagram’s search features to look for hashtag opportunities.

Just type in the words you’re considering using and it’ll pull up how many posts are using them. Aim for hashtags with less than 500K posts.

Stats show brands that use at least one hashtag get 12.6% more engagement. And the optimal number of hashtags to use is 11.

Also, it’s a good idea to create videos on topics that are currently trending. If you’re one of the first to talk about it (and hashtag it), then your video is more likely to show up and get a ton of views.

This shouldn’t be your standalone method for growing your Instagram video views. But it should definitely be in your video marketing toolbox.

2. Post Videos at Peak Times

Publishing your videos at the right times is key if you want to get max visibility for your posts. If you are busy at peak times, then you can use automated social management tools or a social media manager.

The first few hours after posting your video is critical – this is when you’ll get the most engagement. So getting a good number of users liking and commenting on it will help push it up in the Instagram feed.

Selecting the best day of the week to post your videos can be tricky. You’ll find some stats that say Monday is the best, while others say it’s the worst.

We also find that Wednesday to be an optimal day for getting more engagement.

Then there are stats that show the best times to target consumers is at 8 am, 1 pm, and 9 pm on any given day. But in the end, you have to do your own research.

Your target audience will play a big role in determining peak hours. For example, if you’re targeting health nuts, then you may find they like to check Instagram in the morning before heading out for a jog.

Test different days and times to see what the peak hours are for your target group.

3. Sound Isn’t an Absolute Must

In fact, a lot of online users are consuming video content in mute. This may be because they’re in a public place, want privacy, or at work.

On Facebook, 85% of users are watching videos without the sound on. You can capitalize on this trend by creating videos that have no sound.

Instead, use subtitles or visuals that are self-explanatory.

This is helpful since Instagram videos are automatically muted until the user clicks the sound on. So to make your video stand out, use eye-catching colors, engaging text, your brand logo, and other visually-appealing techniques.

Now, this doesn’t mean you can’t put sound – it just means your video should be watchable without it.

4. Connect Your Instagram to Your Other Social Accounts

Just because you’re trying to grow followers on Instagram doesn’t mean you can’t spread the love on other channels. In fact, you’ll find most users have accounts on multiple channels, including Instagram.

For example, you can connect your Instagram account with your Facebook profile. Then whenever you post something on Instagram, you can share it on Facebook.

Doing this will help drive your Facebook followers to your Instagram account. And if they like and share the post, it can help gain attention of their friends.

This is an excellent way to leverage your other accounts that are already successful.

Having a video go viral on another social media platform can significantly grow your list of followers on Instagram.
